The John Marshall Law School in Chicago Helps Servicemembers Cut Student Debt, Succeed With One-of-a-Kind Student Veterans Resource Center
(PRWEB) February 27, 2014 -- Members of the military attending The John Marshall Law School are offered support and guidance in seeking a law degree and post-graduate employment.
For many years, the John Marshall Law School in Chicago has helped veteran servicemembers cut their law school debt. Since 2011 alone, John Marshall has awarded nearly $328,500 to law students under the Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon GI Bill.
Through the Yellow Ribbon program, John Marshall fully matches any scholarship money student veterans are offered. The program reinforces John Marshall’s commitment to veterans as well as helping law students succeed in finding a job with less worry over law school finances. In addition to matching scholarships, the Student Veterans Resource Center assists vet applicants with financial aid or other scholarship issues they may face.
“We are extremely proud of the financial help we are able to provide our law students in alleviating some of their law school debt,” Dean John E. Corkery said. “It is especially gratifying to help law students who have served a great duty to our country.”
The Student Veterans Resource Center is located in John Marshall’s Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic (VLSC), which sits in a 5,300 square foot state-of-the-art facility. It is the first private space in the Midwest designed for people with post-traumatic stress disorder and the largest facility of its kind.
The VLSC aims to provide a place where vets feel welcome. “We know that veterans, reservists, and active-duty servicemembers interested in law school confront a different set of challenges than civilian applicants,” said Thomas White, clinical director of the VLSC. “We're committed to helping you easily navigate the application process, as well as provide you support regarding financial aid and scholarships.”
Since 2007, when the VLSC was first founded by student servicemembers, the nationally recognized clinic has given students the opportunity to serve those who served, while earning degree credits.
