The Launch of Be My Light, a Not-for-Prof Aiming to Help Egyptian Street Children
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 21, 2013 -- Be My Light, a US based not-for-profit organization, opens its doors with the mission of raising resources and awareness for Egypt’s Street Children.
Decades of oppression under an autocratic government topped by three years of political instability through revolutions has caused the Egyptian economy to collapse leaving millions of Egyptian families living hand-to-mouth. In 2000, a UNISCO sponsored survey reported that 86% of Egyptian street children identified violence as a major problem in their life and 50% stated that they had been exposed in some manner to rape.
What began as a marginal social problem had now reached an epidemic state with more than one million children left homeless and without any parental guidance. These street children lead an unfit and extremely dangerous life that leaves them deprived of their basic needs for protection, guidance, and supervision and exposes them to different forms of exploitation and abuse.
Be My Light will begin its effort to improve the lives of Egyptian street children and to educate and empower individual boys and girls and, in certain situations, their teenage single mothers. The organization is planning the opening educational centers around the country, targeting these street children. The centers, set up to deal specifically with the problems faced by the homeless children, will provide them with meals, basic education, a space to rest and engage in recreational activities. "It is an elating and heart breaking undertaken at the same time, I’m hoping we will gather enough support to make a difference in the lives of these innocent, vulnerable beings," said Heba Elshinawy, Be My Light co-founder.
