The Long Beach Law Office of Michael D. Waks Announces Winner of Essay Contest for Students Living With a Disability
Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2016 -- Attorney Michael D. Waks awarded $1,000 to the winner of the Michael D. Waks Essay Contest for students living with a disability. Disabled high school seniors and undergraduates attending a 2 or 4 year California accredited university or college, were invited to participate.
Students were asked to write a story or essay on the following theme:
What educational challenges have you experienced due to your disability? How have you overcome these challenges in the past and how will you overcome them in the future? How has your disability influenced your choice of study and career?
Mr. Waks is proud to announce that Michael Rice of Orange, CA is the winner of this year’s Essay Contest. Diagnosed with autism when he was 10, Michael is considered high functioning in the spectrum. With the help of Harbor Regional Center, http://www.harborrc.org/, Michael has learned to overcome many challenges he faced when he was younger.
HRC also introduced him to the College 2 Career program, http://www.harborrc.org/news/features/c2c, at Long Beach City College, where he was accepted. The program helps students with disabilities live independently while pursuing a degree at Long Beach City College, http://lbcc.edu/. Michael is provided his own apartment, life coaching, and daily academic counseling. When he graduates, the College 2 Career program will assist him with job placement.
Michael plans on getting an Associates degree in Kinesiology, the study of movement while exercising, from Long Beach City College, with a certificate in physical fitness training. He then plans to transfer to California State University Long Beach to further his Kinesiology study and obtain a Bachelors degree. He hopes to have a career as a biomedical engineer.
