The Martial Arts Kid Movie is Now Available on DVD and Blue Ray

This film is a coming of age story centered around a troubled teen (Robbie Oaks) that moves from Cleveland, Ohio to Cocoa Beach, Florida to live with his aunt and uncle. His first night there he runs into a bully (Bo Whitlaw). Later, the movie takes a hopeful turn when Robbie discovers that his aunt and uncle own a martial arts dojo and are both decorated and respected masters of their craft. Robbie then asks to learn Martial Arts, because he “wants to be a part of something good”. In his lessons he learns about honor, discipline, control, respect, and what it means to practice the Martial Arts.

The film showcases what real martial arts lessons look like with even some pointers for beginners interested in joining. The main character, Robbie, goes through a series of belts but only gets to a green belt in the film as the producers, James Wilson and Cheryl Sanders (also both prominent figures in the martial arts world), wanted to keep the film realistic and show that Robbie has to work hard for his belts, and that he’s not going to become a black belt overnight.
Robbie’s antagonist in the film, Bo Whitlaw, is a local whose father is a fearsome figure in the community, and Bo feels that it’s ok to be a bully. The film has a big anti-bullying theme in it. According to MAAB (Martial Artists Against Bullying) 28% of students between the ages 12-18 are bullied each year and according to Bullying Statistics 77% of all students are or have been bullied either verbally or worse, while 14% of that 77% have a severe or bad reaction including depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem. In the film, Robbie learns that with family and the community support in his dojo that he can cope with his troubles. He eventually confronts his bully to protect the ones he cares about.
