The National Children’s Cancer Society Announces 2016 Conferences For Childhood Cancer Survivors, Parents and Teachers
St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) January 31, 2016 -- The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) has announced a schedule of conferences throughout 2016 to help childhood cancer survivors and their parents and teachers understand and cope effectively with issues of survivorship.
The conferences are a partnership of the NCCS Beyond the Cure Program and hospitals across the country. Each conference will address various topics affecting survivors, including late effects from cancer treatment, educational and career needs, medical issues and healthy living practices.
Beyond the Cure provides educational assistance and other resources to meet the long-term needs of pediatric cancer survivors. It is just one of the many programs offered by the nonprofit NCCS, which has helped more than 38,000 children with cancer and their families since it was founded in 1987.
“We like to say that survivorship really begins at diagnosis,” said Pam Gabris, NCCS Beyond the Cure coordinator. “Our goal is to help meet the survivor’s needs throughout their life. The conferences provide a place for survivors and parents to gain information about the latest health research, find resources for issues they might be experiencing, and meet and encourage one another in their survivorship journeys.”
The NCCS provides grants to the sponsoring hospitals to help offset the cost of the conference and supplies. It also provides materials covering many aspects of survivorship for attendees to take home and use as a reference.
There are currently eight conferences scheduled in 2016 and the organization anticipates adding more. The first conference, held in January, focused on the needs of young adult survivors who are now tackling the challenges of college. The upcoming conferences are as follows:
