ABC News recently highlighted a case in which one man is now on multiple medications daily following alleged acetaminophen-related liver failure in 1993. His diagnosis of acetaminophen toxicity led to a liver transplant. According to the November 5, 2014 ABC News report, the man had been taking Extra Strength Tylenol at the recommended dose for a few days to battle the symptoms of the flu.
Tylenol is among the most popularly used painkillers on the market and is sold in both over-the-counter and prescription versions in a variety of formulations for pediatric and adult patients, Parker Waichman LLP, notes.
In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Tylenol, and other acetaminophen-containing drugs, may cause severe liver damage. The agency then issued limits on the amount of acetaminophen allowed in any medication and also mandated a Black Box warning, its most serious warning, be applied to the drug’s packaging.
