The North America Office of Duesseldorf Tourism and Duesseldorf Airport Announce: Schumannfest 2014 in Duesseldorf – Dates for Biennial Event: May 16 – June 2
Düsseldorf, Germany (PRWEB) January 31, 2014 -- The city where Robert Schumann, master composer and musician of the Romantic period, lived and worked is gearing up for the citywide biennial celebration of his artistic beauty and genius, which still resonate in today’s art and music world with a freshness that is rare for a classical composer. The program offers an amazing line-up of some of the world’s biggest names in music and arts, performing works and pieces from and inspired by Schumann at the city’s most exclusive performance venues, and is testimony to the strong connection to his progressive style and personality that many artists still feel today.
Headliners include: American violinist Hilary Hahn, performing with Düsseldorf’s pianist Hauschka as the duo “The New Romantics”; Hollywood actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, reading as various characters from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream set to music; Nils Petter Molvaer, Norwegian master of the trumpet and Nordic ambient sound, performs his latest piece “LUCID DREAM,” an interactive installation of sound, light, and video set in a forest dreamscape; David Garret will play romantic pieces on his Stradivarius violin; master pianist Boris Berezovsky brings to life the essence of Schumann’s soul in his masterfully fast and romantic style; and, last but not least, star conductor Mario Venzago and the Düsseldorf symphony orchestra, featuring American star violinist Stefan Jackiw, will perform a rarity on stage: Schumann’s famous 4th Symphony.
Schumann spent his last creative years in Düsseldorf as the city's musical director from 1850-1854 and lived at five different addresses, including one on the beautiful tree-lined Königsallee, which today is one of Europe’s main high-end shopping boulevards. Schumann is regarded as a forward-thinking musician and thinker, whose artistic expression and heightened sensitivity seemed at times too modern for his own good.
Düsseldorf is considered the quintessential “Schumann City,” and the festival’s events will take place in various venues across the city, most of them at the planetarium-turned-concert venue Tonhalle.
