The PGA is Returning to the Black Course for The Barclays from Aug. 23rd - Aug. 28th 2016, and Area Hotels Such As the Holiday Inn Westbury are Seeing Increased Demand.
Long Island, New York (PRWEB) July 06, 2016 -- In 2002 and 2009 the PGA held the U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park, and it was Tiger Woods that won the championship, and the only golfer to finish the tournament under par in 2002. It was the first public course to be utilized for the U.S. Open championship. Long Islanders and golf enthusiasts from all over the world remember it well, and since then when any tournament is played there, fans of the sport become very excited. The last time The Barclays was held there was in 2012, and although it did not draw the crowds that the U.S. Open championships had in the past, it was still a great time to be on Long Island, and back on the Black.
The PGA is returning to Long Island and the Bethpage Black Course for The Barclays tournament August 23rd through August 28th 2016, and many Long Island hotels in the area are gearing up to be host to many visitors from all around the country, and from overseas. Fans of golf have come to know the Black Course very well, and since it gained so much notoriety in 2002, many that partake in the sport have traveled from near and far in an attempt to beat the Black, or perhaps just have their feet touch the legendary grass.
The General Manager of the Holiday Inn Westbury Long Island, Franklin Manchester had the opportunity to meet some of the professional golfers that played in the tournament back in 2002, and the Hotel he was working at as general manager during the time was host to professional golfer Vijay Singh. At the end of the tournament, Vijay Singh personally gave Franklin the golf bag that he had used throughout the U.S. Open, which Franklin recalls vividly. Franklin still has the bag today that Singh took upon himself to sign and autograph in several places for Franklin.
When Franklin was asked about golf on Long Island, and more specifically about the Bethpage Black Course and The Barclays, he stated, "There is something special about Bethpage Black. There is a certain mystique and lore to it. It's a special place. I had the opportunity and privilege to go to the U.S. Open championships, and the the Black just has a unique grandeur about it. I don't play the sport well enough to play the game there, and I guess I know my limitations in not giving it a try. I've had the honor to play on some great courses around the country, but I have a particular awe and respect for the Black that keeps me off of it even though it's a public course, and right here in my own backyard. I hope to make it over there for the upcoming FedEx Cup tournament, even if it's just for a day.
The Holiday Inn Westbury is approximately 12 miles from Bethpage State Park, which is approximately 20 minutes in distance driving time. The Hotel has seen demand increase for The Barclays tournament, and the Hotel still has some availability for most dates; however, Franklin added that it will not last long. He encourages those that plan on attending The Barclays tournament to make their hotel reservations as soon as possible if they have not already done so. He said, "The entire area will have increased compression with the tournament being held at Bethpage, and the summer months, particularly August are a busy time of year for Long Island hotels to begin with. Our rates are slightly higher, but right now we're offering some advanced purchase discounts and special promotions that guests can still take advantage of for savings and added value.
Most of the increase in hotel demand and occupancy will take place in Nassau County, Long Island, and in western Suffolk County, but when those hotels fill up, the demand can and will most likely be far reaching. Of course the closer one wants or attempts to stay near Bethpage State Park, the higher the rates may be just because of supply and demand as people seek to be as close as possible to the Course and the event.
