The Phillips Law Group is Examining Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Claims related to Pradaxa Use as Drug Maker Consents to $650 Million Settlement

On May 28, a Bloomberg report announced that Boehringer had agreed to settle approximately 4,000 lawsuits against the company for $650 million. Divided between the plaintiffs, each claim should receive around $162,500.
The claims regarding the drug alleged that the pharmaceutical company knew that Pradaxa could cause excessive bleeding in patients, and failed to adequately warn consumers of the dangers. The May 28 Bloomberg report also states that after Pradaxa was approved by the FDA in 2010, 542 deaths and 3,781 side effects were reported in 2011.
According to a Reuters report on May 28, Pradaxa is one of several new blood thinners developed as an alternative to warfarin, an older blood thinner used to prevent strokes caused by blood clots. This type of blood thinner is often prescribed for those suffering from atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat common in the elderly.
The settlement was announced almost a week after Boehringer admitted that a new analysis of the drug study used to win FDA approval did not include 22 serious bleeding events. Other court documents have also suggested that Boehringer did not inform U.S. regulators that Pradaxa may be causing more fatal bleeding complications than were previously reported.
On December 10, 2013, Bloomberg reported that the drug company was sanctioned by a federal judge and ordered to pay a fine of $931,000 for destroying evidence regarding Pradaxa’s development and marketing, as well as acting in bad faith. While these sanctions may have persuaded Boehringer to settle, the pharmaceutical company maintains that it has committed no wrongdoing, and issued a statement to that effect. Boehringer said that it continues to stand behind Pradaxa, and believes that the lawsuit have no merit, but decided to settle in order to avoid lengthy and protracted litigation.
