The Pill Increases Risk for DVT/PE and Potentially Fatal Blood Clots in Women
Sheboygan, Wisconsin (PRWEB) December 14, 2016 -- Dr. Mansoor Mirza, President and CEO of Travel Medicine Inc., along with Dr. John Livermore and Dr. Awais Siddique, would like to help prevent deaths of women using The Pill with increased risk of potentially fatal consequences including blood clots by educating and offering preventative solutions at http://www.preventdvtnow.com.
“The Pill” is an oral contraceptive that is commonly prescribed for women to prevent pregnancy and correct menstrual imbalance. However, its use has also been shown to increase the risk for potentially fatal blood clots by two to four times when compared to women not taking the pill. While the risk/benefit is appropriate for most women, they need to be aware of the increased risk of blood clots and the symptoms because doctors often initially misdiagnose the condition, especially in otherwise healthy women.
Blood clots can form in your arms or legs where they’re called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If a piece of a clot breaks off and travels to your lungs, it’s called a pulmonary embolism (PE). 60,000-100,000 Americans die of DVT/PE each year while as many as 900,000 are affected by it via temporary or permanent damage.
The beginning symptoms of DVT/PE can be mild to severe, making it harder to accurately diagnose the condition. Doctors can initially misdiagnosis the symptoms as a sports injury, muscle sprain/strain, pneumonia, a panic attack, exercise-induced asthma, or the flu instead of correctly identifying a potentially fatal clot and immediately starting life-saving treatment.
It’s possible to reduce risk, prevent permanent damage, and avoid DVT/PE-related death even while continuing to take The Pill. To do so, women need to be aware of risk factors, take steps to minimize or avoid the risks that they can control, learn about prevention possibilities, and make sure to get to the ER immediately if symptoms develop.
Dr. Mirza would like to empower women by educating them about the increased risk of DVT/PE when taking The Pill and by helping them understand the other factors that can increase risk along with teaching them about preventative options.
