The popular Video DownloadHelper Firefox add-on now available on Chrome
GRASSE, FRANCE (PRWEB) June 10, 2015 -- Today, the first version of Video DownloadHelper for Chrome has been launched on the Google Web Store (http://chrome.downloadhelper.net/).
Often referred as the Swiss army knife of video capture, Video DownloadHelper is a very popular Firefox add-on to download videos from most Web sites. Since 2008, it has been the second most downloaded extension on Firefox, with 200 million downloads and over 5 million users a day.
“Porting Video DownloadHelper to Chrome has been by far the most requested feature for years since Google enabled extensions on their browser”, said Michel Gutierrez, the original developer of the program, and CEO of ACLAP, the Video DownloadHelper editor. “The complete rewriting of the add-on in early 2015 from a pure Firefox architecture to more common HTML5 technologies allowed a painless port, with a very similar user experience on both browsers”.
Video DownloadHelper installs as a little icon in the browser toolbar and monitors what happens in the browser. Whenever a video is detected in a Web page, the icon activates. When the user clicks the toolbar button, the list of available videos appears, and an additional click on the desired video gets it to the local hard disk for later replay.
In the first version of Video DownloadHelper for Chrome, only the core features of the add-on have been ported. This includes the automatic naming of the video files, that can be configured on a per-domain basis, to use any text at a specified location in the Web page containing the video, or use an obfuscated name for better privacy. It is also possible to use the blacklisting feature to prevent video ads to pollute the detection and confuse the user with cumbersome useless material in the interface.
The add-on developer noted “Not all features from the Firefox version have been ported to Chrome yet, like the direct screen capture, Periscope recording or F4F streaming for catchup TV. We are waiting to see how that Chrome version will be received to decide for further development investments”.
