The Rogers Foundation to Transform Black Mountain Institute with $30 Million Gift
Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) March 30, 2015 -- Philanthropists James E. and Beverly Rogers, well-known leaders in the charge to improve education in Southern Nevada, have committed $30 million to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Literary Institute: The Black Mountain Institute. It is the largest cash gift in the institute’s history, and a remarkable commitment to improved education and the arts in Southern Nevada.
The Rogers Foundation donation will support numerous BMI programs to include, $25K fellowships for creative writing Ph.D. students, stipends for the Diana Bennett Creative Writing Fellows and underwriting for Witness, BMI’s literary magazine. Additionally, the gift will fund Rainmaker translations for works not available in English, and support for two City of Asylum writers - a program that provides shelter in the community to a persecuted writer whose voice is stifled by censorship, or who is living with the threat of imprisonment or assassination. Lastly, the gift will support enhancements to the new space for BMI that the university is largely funding.
“Few dollars flow these days to humanities and creative arts programs compared to other disciplines,” said UNLV President Emerita Carol C. Harter and Executive Director at Black Mountain Institute. “ We are doubly grateful for the Rogers gifts and for having wonderful Beverly Rogers as our dear friend and colleague.” James E. Rogers, a dedicated philanthropist and former Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor, passed away on June 14, 2014, at the age of 75.
Aptly renamed the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute, UNLV’s literary institute for creative writers and scholars, is an international literary center dedicated to promoting discourse on today’s most pressing issues. BMI works to exert national, and ultimately global, influence by supporting a host of mutually reinforcing literary endeavors. These activities include readings, lectures, and panel discussions by public intellectuals whose work embodies BMI's mission.
