The Story of “Chico” the Chihuahua Is a Reminder to Pet Owners of the Importance of Heartworm Prevention
(PRWEB) April 17, 2014 -- Chico, a 12 year old Chihuahua, was suddenly fainting, coughing, had abdominal distension, and swelling in his legs. After an echocardiogram was performed by Dr. Orr, a board-certified cardiologist at VRCC, it was confirmed that Chico had Heartworm disease which also resulted in abnormally high blood pressure (pulmonary hypertension) and right sided congestive heart failure.
Left untreated, Heartworm disease can be much more difficult to treat, and there can be irreparable damage to both the heart and pulmonary arteries.
VRCC’s veterinarians remind pet owners that prevention is key and administering a monthly Heartworm preventative such as Heartgard easily prevents Heartworm disease. While cases of Heartworm are few in Colorado, dogs that come from other parts of the country can bring the disease here, and because it is spread through mosquitoes, every dog is at risk of acquiring this disease.
Chico is a lucky dog. His owners were on top of his symptoms and got him the care he needed. After several months of series of medicines, injections and strict cage rest, Chico is officially Heartworm free, very active, and loves to play soccer.
About Heartworm:
Heartworm disease is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis that is spread to dogs through mosquito bites. Cats can also get heartworm disease but they are more resistant to the infection.
Heartworm Symptoms to look out for:
• Coughing
• Exercise intolerance
• Increased breathing or effort
• Abdominal distention
• Fainting
• Discolored urine
