Fortunately, there are helpful tools that make keyword research for SEO purposes much easier.

Google’s Keyword Planner is the perfect tool to use to get data about Google searches, since it comes directly from Google. Only a Google AdWords account is needed to use this site, which pulls keyword suggestions from a website, can save keyword portfolios, and allows one to segment keyword results by country, date range, historical trends etc, and can save keyword portfolios. (Some similar tools are Keyword Discovery, Google Trends , and Hitwise.)

Many other tools are helpful for keyword research and competitive intelligence as well. Being competitive in the keyword department is crucial, since anyone who is outranking one for their choice keywords is the competition. These websites help give insight on what the competition is doing and how they’re performing:

• Searchmetrics.com can be filtered to show data in various ways and gives one the capability to see fresh data that’s updated weekly (organic visibility) or more in-depth data (long tail). It can also be used to input the competition’s URL and get a list of keywords that they are ranking and getting traffic for. It also shows the traffic index, how much traffic a keyword is driving to the website, the search volume, and the popularity of a keyword.

• SEMrush.com works similarly to Searchmetrics.com. It provides the ranking, search and traffic volume, historical trends for the last 12 months and more information for the keywords linked to the URL. It also shows the number of results returned for a certain keyword and allows one to export data to Excel and order custom reports.

• Some similar tools are Keywordspy.com, iSpionage.com, and Spyfu.com.
