The V Foundation for Cancer Research Chief Executive Officer Recognized by American Society of Clinical Oncology
Cary, NC (PRWEB) June 05, 2016 -- The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research funding organizations, announces its Chief Executive Officer, Susan Braun, received the 2016 Partners in Progress Award given by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for her dedication to enhance cancer prevention, treatment and patient care. One of 16 Special Awards recipients to be honored at the ASCO Annual Meeting, Braun accepted the distinguished award for her commitment to the care of people with cancer and service in leadership roles at major cancer nonprofit organizations throughout the past 20 years.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award. Since losing my college roommate to cancer 25 years ago, this work has been my passion,” said Braun. “I believe there is some way each of us can contribute to creating a better world, and I'm fortunate to be able to serve in this way.”
The Partners in Progress Award recognizes a person involved in patient advocacy activities that has increased public awareness about cancer, its causes, cures or treatment or activities that result in additional support legislatively or fiscally for cancer research, treatment, prevention or care. The 16 Special Awards honorees in 2016 include researchers, patient advocates and global oncology community leaders.
Allen S. Lichter, MD, FASCO, CEO of ASCO, presented Braun with the Partners in Progress Award on June 5, during an education session titled “Cancer Survivorship: Is Every Patient’s Journey the Same?” This year’s ASCO Annual Meeting focus is “Collective Wisdom: The Future of Patient-Centered Care and Research,” drawing more than 30,000 oncology professionals from around the world to Chicago from June 3 to June 7.
Braun’s Partners in Progress honor follows one of The V Foundation’s most successful years to date, having awarded more than $20 million in cancer research grants in 2015. The Foundation awarded a total of 79 translational, V Scholar and designated grants, marking its most grants awarded and largest financial contribution to the fight against cancer in one fiscal year. With 100% of all direct cash donations and net proceeds of events awarded to cancer research, The V Foundation has funded more than $150 million in cancer research grants at institutions nationwide since its founding in 1993. Last year, The V Foundation also earned its fifth consecutive, 4-star exemplary rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. Receiving four out of a possible four stars for the fifth consecutive year places The V Foundation in the top 6% of rated charities and reflects the Foundation’s sound fiscal management and adherence to accountability and transparency.

Selected as The V Foundation for Cancer Research’s CEO in 2012, Braun has extensive experience as an advocate for people with cancer and with leading major cancer research nonprofits. Her previous professional positions include President and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, now Susan G. Komen. Previously, she was the Executive Director of The ASCO Foundation, currently the Conquer Cancer Foundation, and she has served on several ASCO committees, including Health Services Research and International Committees. Braun was also a founding member of the Breast Health Global Initiative and the World Society for Breast Health, as well as a member of many other boards and committees, including the California Breast Cancer Research Program, American Society for Breast Disease, Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps and Intercultural Cancer Council. She also served as an executive at Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Center for Economic Studies in Medicine. She has been a member of the National Cancer Institute Director’s Consumer Liaison Group for the past seven years.
