The Village at Orchard Ridge's Design Recognized in Environments for Aging Publication
Winchester, VA (PRWEB) May 27, 2014 -- The Village at Orchard Ridge—A National Lutheran Community (TVOR) was included in Environments for Aging’s spring 2014 design publication, published by Long-Term Living. TVOR was selected as one of 43 projects, for creating a town center and village green, surrounded by residences that created an environment conducive for seniors to thrive.
Long-Term Living is a senior living industry publication that reaches more than 28,000 professionals, including CEOs, Executive Directors, and association members. Each spring they feature a special publication, Environments for Aging, selecting projects from across the nation that address design issues and trends related to the needs of the entire aging population—from nursing home residents to active seniors. A panel of 22 judges comprised of architects, interior designers, providers, regulators, consultants, and researchers determine the awardees.
The two-page spread features interior and exterior photographs of the community and highlights the various attributes that led to the selection. The judges were impressed by TVOR’s ability to work with a challenging site and capitalize on buildable areas.
“The primary organizational feature for TVOR was creating a town center and green space encircled by a variety of senior living residences including market rate and rental options,” Partner at RLPS Architects and TVOR’s lead architect Craig Kimmel shared.
He continued to explain the innovative design concepts that contributed to the selection by the panel.
“Much like a traditional town, most of the community spaces are on the first floor with apartments on the upper floors. For the homes along the entry drive, we raised the front porches and moved the garages behind the homes, and kept the focus on the pedestrian-friendly streetscape. One distinctive aspect of this community is the small house concept which pairs a 10-bed skilled nursing care house and an 18-bed memory care house, maintaining the desired residential scale and offering operational efficiencies.”

The Village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester, Va., is a new continuing care retirement community (CCRC) on 132-acres in the Shenandoah Valley. The community opened in February 2013 and offers independent living cottage homes and apartments with in-home services, memory care, and skilled nursing for both long-term care and short-term rehabilitation. Currently, The Village at Orchard Ridge is in pre-sales for its Phase II expansion, which will include additional independent living apartments and cottages, a wellness center with an indoor pool, and the expansion of dining areas and skilled nursing. Construction is expected to be completed mid-2016.
