The Winnipeg Humane Society is Hosting a Farm-to-Table Animal Celebration
Winnipeg, MB (PRWEB) April 10, 2014 -- As a compassionate alternative to this year’s Manitoba Pork Council Annual General Meeting, taking place in April, The Winnipeg Humane Society’s Farm Animal Compassion Committee is hosting an evening celebration of pigs, “Take Back Manitoba From Factory Farming!” This event will connect voices from sustainable pig farming to consumers and animal advocates, who together are striving for a better, more humane Manitoba. This family-friendly evening is taking place Wednesday, April 16 at the Park Theatre (698 Osborne Street). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $10, available online (via the Park Theatre) or by contacting the Winnipeg Humane Society.
The evening will feature four speakers: Paul Shapiro, Vice President of Farm Animal Protection of The Humane Society of the United States; Laura Rance, Editor of the Manitoba Co-Operator; Ruth Pryzner, Eco-Farmer based in Western Manitoba; and Laurel Kidder, Member of the Farm Animal Compassion Committee of the Winnipeg Humane Society.
“This evening importantly demonstrates the growing public concern for Manitoba’s farmed pigs, especially sows who are caged for their entire adult lives in stalls no bigger than their own bodies. Consumers are reaching out for healthy and sustainable alternatives to factory farmed meat,” says Dr. Dana Medoro, Chair of the WHS Farm Animal Compassion Committee.
At their 2013 AGM, The Manitoba Pork Council brought in Rick Berman, who earned the moniker “Dr. Evil” owing in part to his PR campaign in defense of the tobacco industry, and his repeated smear campaigns against the Humane Society of the United States more recently. “The fact that the Pork Council brought in a speaker like Mr. Berman shows where they are at in terms of respecting consumer concerns; they are happy to keep ignoring public calls for better treatment of Manitoba’s pigs,” continues Medoro. “This event will celebrate alternative ways of raising pigs, and will highlight the co-operation needed to move forward.”
This event features many door prizes to be won, with further opportunities to win at our fantastic silent auction! There will also be a bake sale, and WHS Farm Animal t-shirts will be available for purchase. All proceeds from this event will support Winnipeg Humane Society Farm Animal campaigns.
