Everybody loves a comeback story. And that’s the kind of story DerbyDeals.com has to tell.
DerbyDeals.com is a sport travel and ticket brokerage company, and, as its name implies, it specializes in ticket packages and individual ticket sales for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks as well as other key Thoroughbred racing events.
This year has been an extremely busy one for DerbyDeals.com, said Anastasia Austen, the company’s vice president of marketing and public relations. DerbyDeals.com has worked with hundreds of customers this year to help provide the Derby experience they’re seeking — whether it’s a couple of tickets to the track on Derby Day or a weeklong experience including hotel stays, transportation, hard-to-get party tickets and tourism opportunities.
“One of the best parts of my job is assisting our customers so they experience the pageantry that is Derby,” Austen said. “We have a lot of repeat VIP clients who use our services every year, but it’s also rewarding to help customers put a checkmark by a ‘bucket list’ item. You’d be surprised how many people have dreamed of coming to the Kentucky Derby.”
Austen’s enthusiasm about her work is not limited to the joy she receives from lining up people with their dream Derby experience. She’s also overjoyed by DerbyDeals.com’s comeback.
Austen works for Barry Bernstein, who bought DerbyDeals.com in August 2014 from founder Scott Davis, who wound up in the crossfire of a business deal gone wrong that left him without the supply of Derby tickets for some clients. A few unhappy customers sounded off to the media.
In the Louisville market, DerbyDeals.com was left with the kind of black eye no business wants as Davis wound up embroiled in an investigation but eventually was never charged with any crimes.
In the wake of that controversy, Davis sold the business to Bernstein, who is owner of Indianapolis-based Access Entertainment Group LLC, which is a ticket reseller for other legendary events, including the Super Bowl and Final Four in addition to other Triple Crown races and the Breeders’ Cup Thoroughbred championship races.
“DerbyDeals.com is a great brand name that really resonates with our customers. It performs very well in online searches and had years of happy customers,” Bernstein said. “There was a strong book of business in place and excellent existing relationships in the industry that Scott had built that are priceless. For the most part, it was people in the Louisville market who were aware of the trouble the company experienced due to local media coverage. People don’t realize how many happy customers there were in 2014. We looked at the numbers and overall reputation of the business, which were excellent. Our company decided to move forward in a positive way, and we are doing all the right things. We picked up a great asset by purchasing DerbyDeals.com.”
Since the 2014 purchase, DerbyDeals.com has continued to serve that strong customer base, which has continued to grow. The company leadership has worked hard to provide customer guarantees and the best service possible, said Austen, who works out of DerbyDeals.com headquarters in Indianapolis as well as their new office in Jeffersonville, Ind.
In Indianapolis, the Better Business Bureau has given DerbyDeals.com an A rating as an accredited business.
“We’re proud of the A rating the Indianapolis BBB has given us,” Austen said. “We’ve worked diligently to rebuild a strong company reputation. The BBB rating is a powerful indicator of that, but there’s even more proof in the growing number of satisfied customers and business relationships we have.”
DerbyDeals.com also has verification of its business character in recent acknowledgements by the ticket reseller industry. In the past six months, DerbyDeals.com has been accepted as a member of the National Association of Ticket Brokers and it’s been named as part of StubHub.com’s Top Seller Program that is by invitation only, Austen said.
In both cases, those are industry gold standards achieved only by vetted and verified ticket brokers, she explained.
“You have to have a solid track record as an upstanding business to be accepted by the NATB and acknowledged by StubHub,” Austen said. “We’ve always held our heads high and moved forward running this business – even when references to the former owner’s situation have come up. Sadly, he was a victim of unethical suppliers. It was horrible for everyone involved. To fix the problem, we reworked our supply chain options and in the process were able to direct investigators to the source of the previous owner’s problems. We continue to build on a strong, recognizable brand. We know that blemishes on the company name in the past will fade in time as we continue to provide excellent Kentucky Derby packages, seats and service.”
For Austen, she is satisfied most when she sees the reactions of happy customers who have the time of their lives at the Kentucky Derby.
“Most people don’t realize the sometimes crazy efforts ticket brokers go through to obtain the right tickets, reserve the right hotel rooms and put together a magical experience for customers,” Austen said. “But when I watch that play out with happy customers during Derby Week, there’s nothing better. That’s my Derby victory.”
