Tidewater Physical Therapy Offers Dry Needling Specialty In Clinics Across Southeast and Central Virginia
Newport News, Va. (PRWEB) July 21, 2014 -- Tidewater Physical Therapy is pleased to announce that 14 of its clinicians have earned their dry needling certification and the innovative treatment for pain is now being offered in 11 of its clinics from Virginia Beach to Richmond.

Dry needling is an invasive procedure where a certified physical therapist inserts a sterile, solid filament needle into the skin and muscle of a patient and directly into a trigger point to help alleviate pain and other discomfort associated with a variety of conditions.
There is no medication administered during the procedure, thus giving the treatment the “dry” name. While often associated with acupuncture because a similar tool is used, dry needling is strictly based on Western medicine and research.
“There are mechanical, biomechanical and biochemical effects associated with the procedure,” said Kevin Schrack, PT, OCS, CMTPT of Tidewater Physical Therapy’s Franklin Clinic. Schrack is among the clinicians certified. “Inserting a needle into trigger points can cause favorable responses which are the first step in breaking the pain cycle. The increased blood flow, oxygen and change in pH level of the treated area can lead to pain reduction.”
Dry needling is used in a physical therapy clinic in addition to therapeutic exercises and manual therapy and can be used to treat a variety of musculosketal conditions, including neck, shoulder, jaw and low back pain; tennis elbow; carpal tunnel; muscle strains; and headaches.
“For a lot of our patients, this is something new for them,” said Ken Morris, PT, DPT, CMTPT of the Hidenwood and Magruder Clinics in Newport News and Hampton, who has been performing dry needling procedures on patients since earning the certification. “Any Tidewater Physical Therapy PT is happy to talk through the options. The treatment is used for a variety of acute and chronic pain conditions on people of all ages.”
Most patients, Morris said, do not feel the insertion of the needle.
“When the needle contacts a trigger point, a localized twitch can elicit a very brief response,” Morris said. “Some patients describe this as a little electrical shock. Others say it’s more like a cramp.”
