Time is not enough to recover from divorce, says leading crisis therapist Dr Tracie O’Keefe DCH
Sydney,NSW (PRWEB) December 02, 2013 -- With estimates that the lifelong probability of a marriage ending in divorce is 40% to 50%, it’s time to debunk the myth that time on its own heals the pain of separating from a loved one. While it helps, people must be proactive in their recovery from divorce, according to Dr Tracie O’Keefe DCH, a clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist.
In her new self-help book Inspiration for Survive and Prosper: Personal Transformation Out of Crisis, O’Keefe reveals how to fast-track recovery from divorce. Pulling no punches, she urges people who are still stuck in the trauma of their divorce after more than a year to take action to get themselves out of the crisis stage, transform their lives and go on to prosper.
“Grief is, of course, a normal and necessary protective response to loss but it’s important to move on from living in the past and to create a rewarding, fulfilling present and future,” says O’Keefe. “People can get stuck in that depressive, melancholic state and fail to move on to any form of resolution. In some cases they stay in this loop of depression for the rest of their lives. The divorce becomes the defining event that shapes their lives. It becomes their long-term obsession.”
The difference between those who recover fast from divorce and those who don’t is that the former have made the decision to take control of their emotions and their life, according to O’Keefe.
“It’s about realising that you do have a choice. While there may be some things you have no control over, you can decide how to respond to your current circumstances. You decide how you want to feel, so you become proactive instead of reactive to your life. This one shift in mindset can have dramatic results. You can either stay a victim to your divorce or move past it to lead a satisfying and joyful life,” she says.
O’Keefe has experienced two divorces herself and understands the emotional fallout. “When the love of my life left me last year, I was devastated,” she admits. “I felt abandoned and rejected and as if I’d never be happy again. But I didn’t want to spend my remaining years in trauma, so I used the techniques I’ve shared with thousands of my patients over the years to survive, transform and prosper.”
Some of the qualities needed to successfully recover from divorce fast including tenacity, discipline, adaptability and learning to trust yourself again. “It takes great courage to do this,” says O’Keefe. “It requires you to let go of how things once might have been. You let go of the hopes and dreams you had before the divorce that are now not possible – and make new hopes and dreams for the future.”
