Tom Raffield: New product announcement
Helston, Cornwall, UK (PRWEB UK) 2 June 2014 -- Designer Tom Raffield announces the addition of a selection of brand new products to his award-winning range of contemporary wooden lighting and furniture.
• The May Table, with its integral twist of English Oak offers lovers of Tom’s work their first chance to purchase an indoor side table from his collection.
• A Giant Log Loop gives even more space to store wood in style.
• New, larger versions of the Helix Pendant Light as well as a darker, walnut wood option in all sizes expands the range of options available for this simple but beautiful light pendant.
• The Hive Light is now available in oak, ash or walnut woods.
• A new Helix Floor Light with Wooden or Metal stand, available in oak, ash and walnut, expands Tom’s range of floor lights.
The key new addition to the range is the May Table, named for the uplifting changes of the Spring month of its creation. This piece uses Tom Raffield’s design principle of creating robust, strong and functional pieces with an artisan element. It also pushes the boundaries of what steam bending can achieve.
“I always aim to craft pieces that combine a special beauty with function,” says Tom. “This piece really achieves that as the complex wooden twist beneath the table is both beautiful and integral to the structure. Without it the piece would have no strength. At the same time we are really testing the technique we use and pushing it to create new and beautiful shapes.”
Tom often compares his method of steam bending to drawing a line with a pencil, and the twist beneath the May Table, made from English oak, is a complex 3D bend that shows just how far Tom’s unique technique of bending wood can take the design.
Tom had the opportunity to road test his new range of designs at the recent Chelsea Flower Show, where he also displayed a bespoke piece dubbed the Chelsea Chair.
“The Chelsea Chair is one of our bespoke wooden items, made specifically for the show,” said Tom, “The product really demonstrates just how we are able to handcraft one-off pieces to specific briefs or for special occasions.”
Thousands of people sat in the chair, displayed as part of the Tom Raffield summerhouse within the Artisan Retreat area of the show, where it gained the seal of approval for comfort and design. Many visitors commented on how comfortable the chair was to sit in and admired the functionality and artistic twist which draw on the same principles as the May Table.
The team were also delighted to welcome design, craft and home guru Kirstie Allsop to their retreat.
Tom said: “Kirstie was really enthusiastic about our sustainable products which are handmade in England and said how great it was to see us in the artisan retreat area at the Chelsea Flower Show. She was really interested in the traditional processes we use as that is really something she is well known for championing.”
The May Table is now on sale at tomraffield.com/shop and retails for £995.00. It measures 64cm in height and 68cm in diameter. The other new products can also be found in the shop.
