1. Mount Evans Scenic Highway: To really experience the Rocky Mountains, visitors should set aside a day to take a drive up to Mount Evans. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is a 15-mile two-lane road known as the "road into the sky." The name stems from the massive altitude change visitors experience heading up the road. The drive starts in Idaho Springs at 8,700 feet above sea level and takes visitors up more than 5,500 feet. There are quite a few lookout points from which travelers can admire the view of the Rockies. There is a $10 fee to access the byway; however, hikers, bikers, Federal Recreation Passport holders and people who simply drive to the top and back without stopping will not have to pay.
2. Red Rocks Amphitheater and Park: For some of the best views of the Rocky Mountains combined with miles of hiking trails and big-name music acts, Red Rocks Amphitheater and Park is a perfect place to visit for outdoors and music lovers. The park takes up nearly 900 acres, but the trails vary from the relatively short 1.4-mile-long Trading Post Trail to the 6-mile Red Rocks Trail. The expansive amphitheater, which has hosted such headliners as The Beatles and John Denver, still features famous acts year-round. Tommy Middaugh shares that what is most impressive about this amphitheater is that it is geologically formed by the red rocks, which creates amazing acoustics and an enjoyable atmosphere. The park is 16 miles west of downtown Denver and open every day from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Admission is free.
3. The U.S. Mint: Not many people can say they have seen where their money comes from. The U.S. Mint was opened here in 1863 to transform the Gold Rush's gold dust and nuggets into bars. It wasn’t until 1904 that the Mint began to manufacture gold, silver and copper coins. Now it produces up to 50 million coins a day. The guided tour through the Mint is free and allows visitors to learn more about each stage of coin production. Tourists will get to see everything from the design and sculpting of each piece to the cutting of each type of coin. The U.S. Mint is in downtown Denver near the Denver Art Museum.
