Top 10 Black History Month Scholarships For February 2015
Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 09, 2015 -- February is here again, and Black History month is being celebrated all around the country and even in some parts of the world. Although the shortest month of the year, February has been chosen as the official month of the year to pay tribute to famous African Americans who contributed to society.
But actions speak louder than words, and so many organizations and companies have launched various scholarship funds for African American and other minority students. Collectively, the scholarships give away millions in much needed college funding.
Here are the top 10 Black History month scholarships for this year:
#1 - Steve Harvey Foundation/ Coca-Cola Pay It Forward Scholarship Program: Offers scholarship awards and once-in-a-lifetime apprenticeship experiences to African American youth looking to pave the way for their futures. The program is under the umbrella of the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, and since 2012, the popular talk show host and best-selling author has been providing this opportunity.Partnering with the Coca-Cola Pay It Forward program builds on Harvey’s long-term commitment to mentoring youth. #2 - "Selma" Speech and Essay Scholarship Contest: Open to U.S. high school students ages 14-18 who are currently enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories. To enter the contest, students will be required to view the movie SELMA, recently released by Paramount Pictures, which portrays the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. After viewing the movie, students will be asked to answer an essay question which directly relates to the issue of individual freedom. #3 - 100 Black Men of America Future Leader Scholarship Program: Open to high school seniors as well as college freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. The scholarship is based on academic achievement and community service. To qualify, students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or above. It is also necessary for applicants to have completed 50 hours of community service without compensation within the past 12 months and be able to document their volunteer work. The deadline is in February 2015.

#4 - Regions Riding Forward Black History Month Scholarship: Awarded each year to high school students and college students. Interested students may apply by writing an essay about African-Americans who have inspired them. Regions Bank awards 32 scholarships each year, two in each region where the bank has branches. One scholarship each goes to a high school student planning to attend college, and one scholarship each goes to a current college students. The deadline is in February 2015.

#5 - Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship: For minority high school students in the United States. In addition to a financial grant, the foundation also provides its scholars with mentoring and leadership development opportunities, and internships. To be eligible, all applicants must be graduating seniors and must belong to a minority group (African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, or Native American). #6 - GEICO Achievement Award Program: Helps current college students who are sophomores and juniors earn scholarship money to complete their education. Eligible students must be enrolled in a business, computer science, or mathematics program. Eligibility requirements include a grade point average of 3.0 or above, enrollment in a four-year college or university, volunteer work in the community as well as demonstrated leadership on campus. The deadline is in February 2015.

#7 - Buick Achiever's Scholarship Program: Funded by the GM Foundation, these scholarships are awarded to students who excel in the classroom and give back to their communities. Special consideration is given to students who are female, minorities, first-generation college students, military veterans and military dependents. The scholarship program, which is only available to students in the United States and Puerto Rico, aims to "shape the next generation of leaders and innovators for the automotive industry and other sectors that are so important to the future of our country." The deadline is in February 2015.

#8 - National Association of Black Journalists Scholarships: Offered to students interested in a career in journalism. The scholarship is for high school students and undergraduate college students who are planning to enroll or currently enrolled in college full-time and majoring in journalism. Applicants must major in journalism, communications, or other disciplines related to a journalism career. Up to eight students are awarded scholarships each year. Students must be members of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The deadline is in February 2015.

#9 - United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Scholarships: Provide an extraordinary amount of scholarship opportunities for minority students with financial need. Scholarships include educational assistance for students attending participating Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU) and other colleges as well. Each scholarship program has its own eligibility criteria, deadlines and application requirements. Most scholarships require students to have a grade point average of 2.5 or above and have financial need; however, some scholarships may have higher GPA's and other requirements. The deadline is in February 2015.

#10 - Kroger "I Can Make History" Contest: Award more than $71,000 in prizes in the categories of art, essay, music and poetry. Celebrating Black History month, Kroger, the largest grocery chain in the country, is using the contest to recognize the contributions of African Americans in the past and in the future. Students can choose either to submit artwork, write an essay, compose a song, or create a poem. The contest is open to elementary, middle school, and high school students, grades 4th through 12th. The deadline is in February 2015.

BONUS – HBCU Connect Minority Scholarship: Makes available several scholarships every year to minority applicants who attend or plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The scholarship can be applied to tuition or books for the semester in which the funds are received. HBCU Connect is the largest student and alumni organization of Historically Black College and University supporters on the planet. Founded in 1999, they have given away thousands in scholarship dollars to deserving college students. The deadline is in March 2015.
