6. Many holiday plants are not only poisonous to pets, but also children. These include poinsettias, lilies, and mistletoe. Keep these holiday-themed plants out of the reach of children at all times. Indicators that a child may have ingested something toxic include vomiting, diarrhea and rashes.
7. Never leave leftover food or beverages out after a holiday party or gathering. Children could ingest these items quickly, leading to sickness or other health problems.
8. Ensure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have new and working batteries. These are two of the most important components of wireless home alarm systems, particularly during the holiday season.
9. Typically the holidays mean there’s lots of cooking happening, so take precautions to prevent burns and injuries from occurring to young children. Keep pot handles turned inward toward the stove and never leave the oven door open for any period of time.
10. Be cautious of candles. Many people like to light candles for the holidays, but it only takes a second for a child to burn themselves or turn them over, so always be aware of any burning candles.
