Top Manhattan Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sam Rizk Comments on Teen Surgery Trends
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 01, 2015 -- Summer recess has a whole new meaning. Thanks to social media overload, it’s no longer taboo with teenagers to fix noses and chins with plastic surgery when they’re looking for a boost in self-esteem. According to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPS) more than 236,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients ages 19 and younger in 2012, an increase from previous years.
“The omnipresence of social media and image-driven apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook make teens even more focused on the way they look now compared to just years ago,” says Manhattan facial plastic surgeon Sam Rizk, MD, FACS. “More than ever before, teens are bombarded with their own image and have unlimited access to both images of celebrities and their friends. They are comparing themselves to everyone else, which makes them highly self-critical.”
Supporting this trend, a recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) found that 28% of members saw an increase in cosmetic surgery and facial injectables in those under the age of 25. For both female and male patients under age 35, the most common procedure performed was rhinoplasty (53% females; 70% males), with 20% of those procedures performed on patients under age 21.
Historically, summer months and other holidays are popular times to have plastic surgery. Entering high school or college with a new nose can give teens a fresh start to the year and enhanced confidence to take the hallways by storm.
In New York City, Dr. Rizk, is considered the global innovator in facial plastic surgery. Dr. Rizk incorporates three-dimensional technology with each rhinoplasty to deliver picture-perfect results. His noses look natural and are designed with customized proportions, rounded edges -- not pinched ridges -- and fit each patient’s face.
Rhinoplasty can be an emotionally and physically gratifying operation in teenagers. However, before Dr. Rizk accepts any new teenage patient, he asks two things: do the parents give their consent? And does the teen want the procedure? With parental consent, Dr. Rizk can safely perform rhinoplasty on girls by age 14 and boys by age 15; provided the shoe size has not changed in more than a year. Teenagers who undergo surgery with Dr. Rizk do very well and leave with a perfectly functioning, natural looking nose. Recovery in teens is fast. Not only do they heal more rapidly than adults but their skin is more elastic. They get the desired outcome sooner than adults.
Dr. Rizk’s office is located at 1040 Park Avenue in Manhattan.
