Chess is one of the few sports without an official uniform, despite the fact that over 600 million people play the game worldwide. An initiative to remedy this was recently launched in St. Louis.
The St. Louis location for the chess project was perfect. St. Louis has become a respected chess center and the city has a long and rich history in the fashion industry.
The challenge to design a uniform united two aspects of the city's culture—chess and fashion.

Because chess requires tremendous endurance, the uniforms will need to be practical as well as aesthetically pleasing.
Six designers participated in the project. Each was paired with a [chess grandmaster. Together, the pairs discussed concepts and functionality. Although only one designer won the challenge to create a chess uniform, all of the designs increased excitement for the sport, and brought the importance of a chess uniform to the forefront of peoples' minds.
Chess is an exciting sport and now there's the potential to recognize that in the formation of an official uniform. The question becomes: will each player want to sport their own uniform or will a tournaments provide a tournament-specific uniform all players will wear?
