1. Robert James Fischer "Bobby" (1943-2008). Bobby was an American Grandmaster. He also won the title of World Chess Champion in 1972. He published several chess magazines and books, and as a mathematician and philosopher, he was often ahead of his peers. His successful and avant-garde playing style was a mystery to his competitors at the time.
4. Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik (1911-1995). Botvinnik is a well-known Russian Grandmaster and World Chess Champion. Highly regarded as an engineer and computer scientists, Botvinnik was one of the few players who earned distinction in a career outside of chess. Botvinnik also played a heavy hand in the organization of chess as a sport.
5. Alexander Aleksandrovich Alekhine (1892-1946). Alkehine earned the title of World Chess Champion after defeating José Raúl Capablanca in 1927. He also led France in multiple chess Olympiads. Alkehine is widely respected for his attack style and skilled endgame execution. The opening variation, Alkehine's Defence, is named after him.
