Toyota’s Production System Comes to Hospital Leadership in 3-Day Workshop
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) July 27, 2015 -- What has come to be known as 'Lean' was originally started by Toyota in the 1950's as a way to continually improve operations, reduce waste, and engage the entire workforce. Following Toyota's historic rise in the world of automobile manufacturing, similar methods and ways of thinking are now expanding rapidly into the world of healthcare.
The Lean approach to improvement has proven particularly powerful in the Perioperative Services Department. This department is a major hub of revenue generation and resource consumption. It faces many unique challenges not shared by other hospital departments, including the volume and variety of surgical procedures, instruments and supplies.
"Hospital directors and managers are faced with a myriad of challenges, but are usually not formally trained in how to deal with them in a logical and scientific way, ' said Richard Rahn, Principal of Leonardo Group Americas. "The Lean approach provides a platform for process improvement, both with specific methods and techniques, and with a philosophy that emphasizes teamwork and staff engagement. In the future, every hospital administrator needs to get and apply this knowledge.”
In a partnership with the ConMed Corporation, a leading supplier of surgical instruments, Leonardo Group Americas will be leading a 3-day Lean in the OR public workshop September 15-17 in Largo, Florida to train hospital management and staff to become Lean leaders. Through a combination of lecture, discussion, hands-on exercises, and improvement project planning, this workshop covers all of the key development phases of a Lean for hospitals, including how to create a sustainable Lean culture.
"The success of a hospital’s culture is only possible when there is a leadership team that believes in and supports this new outlook," said Gerard Leone, co-author of the book Lean Roadmap for the OR. "This determination starts with newly obtained knowledge, and is solidified through training and hands-on experience. While most of the examples in the workshop come from Perioperative Services, the training is highly applicable to any hospital professional.”
