Transforming Youth Recovery to Provide a 13 Year Grant for the Washoe County School District
Reno, NV (PRWEB) February 03, 2016 -- Stacie Mathewson, founder of Transforming Youth Recovery, announced today her commitment to fund a grant for one million dollars a year for thirteen years. This will be an innovative research program for K-12 students for the entire Washoe County School District. The success of this evidence-based research program will create a model that will be made available to other school districts around the nation. The funding comes at an important time in our country's history when the prevalence of drug and alcohol misuse is affecting students at an earlier age.
Comprehensive prevention and intervention programs and recovery support services for families are vital for our county’s K-12 students because Nevada youth have statistically significantly higher rates in overall illicit drug use and non-medical use of pain relievers than U.S. youths. Additionally, recent studies show that by the time children reach the twelfth grade, 73 percent of them reported alcohol use and 48 percent used illicit drugs at some point during their lifetime. At the same time, many parents are unaware of their child’s use.
This prevention and intervention program is currently in developmental stages with plans for inclusion to be jointly announced with the Washoe County School District this year. It will include substance misuse prevention and intervention curriculum. “This grant reflects our unique commitment to study prevention implementation and capacity building at a school district and within a community over a 13-year period. The program will be reviewed annually by our research team to ensure the designated milestones against evidenced based best-in-class research criteria are met,” said Stacie Mathewson, founder of Transforming Youth Recovery.
To help support this program Mathewson’s Doors to Recovery, a program under Transforming Youth Recovery, will host a Gala on February 6, 2016, at the Nevada Museum of Art. This is the inaugural event for the Stacie Mathewson Sky Plaza. Guests will enjoy an Old Hollywood, Frank Sinatra-style event including a succulent dinner, and star-studded entertainment.
