Transitions to Host “Focus on Autism” Conference on May 20, 2015
Gloversville, New York (PRWEB) April 27, 2015 -- Transitions is hosting a “Focus on Autism” conference on May 20, 2015 at its facility on Route 30 in Gloversville, NY. The daylong event will feature tours of the building and three presentations on overcoming obstacles, coping with anxiety and navigating social situations with a focus on how these issues intersect with autism.
The conference will begin at noon with “Transforming Obstacles into Opportunities,” a presentation by motivational speaker and Our Ability CEO John Robinson. His story will inspire listeners to achieve the impossible by working hard, earning an education and accepting the help of friends and loved ones. Robinson was born a congenital amputee and has achieved business and familial success through determination, talent and faith. He is the author of his autobiography, “Get Off Your Knees: A Story of Faith, Courage, and Determination” and was featured in a 2009 PBS documentary.
At 2 p.m., the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at the University of Albany will present “Learning Better Ways to Cope: Teaching Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders the Skills to Handle Anxiety.” This training will teach practical techniques to assist those on the autism spectrum with anxiety and problem-solving difficulties, with emphasis on evidence-based strategies that can be taught and used in the home, at work and in college.
The last talk will begin at 4 p.m., when Dr. Liz Laugeson of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA presents “The Science of Social Success for Transitional Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.” Laugeson is the founder and director of UCLA’S Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) Clinic, an outpatient program providing social skills training for young people with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, depression, anxiety and other social impairments. She has received numerous awards for her work, presented research at international conferences and has been featured in several international media outlets.
