Travelers Rank Indianapolis International Airport High Among Best U.S. Airports
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (PRWEB) July 20, 2016 -- The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) recently finished strong in the top 10 best domestic airports in Travel + Leisure Magazine’s annual World’s Best Awards. The Indy airport took the second-place spot on the prestigious list, and beat out some of the nation’s most notable domestic airports.
T+L readers were asked to cast their votes for their favorite hubs across the world, rating airports on access, check-in, security, restaurants, bars, shopping, and design.
“Awards and recognition are always encouraging,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriquez. “But when they result from travelers who experience our airport directly, that’s the best recognition of all. It tells us we’re hitting their expectations, giving them what they want ideally in an airport experience.”
The Indianapolis International Airport came in a few narrow points behind Portland International Airport (Oregon) in taking the top spot. This is the first time the Indy airport has been named a best domestic airport in the World’s Best list.
“To anyone in the travel industry, Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards is a standard of excellence,” said Jay Meyer, vice president and publisher of Travel + Leisure Magazine.
Reader input was collected via an online survey at http://www.tlworldsbest.com from Nov. 2, 2015 to Feb. 29, 2016. Respondents were asked to share their travel experiences by rating airlines, airports, car-rental agencies, cities, cruise ships, destination spas, hotels, hotel brands, islands, tour operators, and safari outfitters on a number of characteristics. Ratings were based on a scale of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. A minimum number of responses was necessary to be eligible in the World’s Best Awards rankings.
“It’s rewarding to know travelers and visitors to the airport recognize and appreciate the many forward-thinking considerations we have made in designing and operating the terminal,” said Rodriquez.
The Indianapolis airport was built with security in mind, allowing passengers to access security screening checkpoints that proceed immediately through to the airport’s concourses. A hallway connector allows passengers to use the shortest security-screening line and still access their airline gate in the designated concourse. The concourses also were designed to be wide open, so passengers can move easily from restaurants and shops and onto their gates.
The Indianapolis airport also features the architectural highlight known as Civic Plaza, which serves passengers and visitors to the airport with a pre-security sampling of the terminal’s fuller line of restaurants and shops. The airport offers well-known local eating establishments such as Café Patachou, Harry & Izzy’s, and Shapiro’s Deli.
Indy Airport, Executive Leader Shining Examples
The Indianapolis airport is a frequent flyer when it comes to awards. Conde Nast Traveler readers named it the best airport in America in 2014 and 2015. In March, it received the Best in North America designation in the Airports Council International's annual Airport Service Quality Awards. The Indy airport has earned this prestigious honor four years in a row, and five times in the past six years. In 2015, the Indianapolis airport was inducted into the Airports Council International Director General’s Roll of Excellence, one of the few U.S. airports to be included in this elite group of worldwide airports.
In June, Rodriquez, as IAA’s top leader, was recognized among a list of prominent Indianapolis male leaders identified as Men of Excellence by the Circle City Links organization. Rodriquez was honored for his leadership experience in the aviation-management industry.
