Trident Systems Develops Automated Regression Test Optimization Tool
Fairfax, Virginia (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- Regression testing of complex software systems consumes significant program schedule and resources. Large test teams and test suites must evolve as the system matures and custom dedicated test environments are used. Regression test selection is subjective and manual.
Trident Systems, specializing in military software systems development, has created a software tool that parses and analyzes source code (currently Java & C++) to capture its class, control, and data dependencies. By analyzing these dependencies and comparing two builds of the source code, SCIAT determines the direct and indirect impact of changes to the code, tests, and requirements. SCIAT provides objective evidence to prioritize and focus regression testing between software builds. Benefits derived from this approach include increased accuracy and efficiency of testing, while improving the quality and reliability of the system. SCIAT maximizes test efficiencies by:
• Automatically collecting objective data to determine the required regression testing for each new build based on source code changed and impacted
• Documents how a given set of tests exercise the changed and impacted code
• Provides insight on what test changes (new, modified or obsolete) are required if the existing set of test procedures does not provide adequate test coverage on new build

SCIAT was successfully used in several pilots on Aegis software components, analyzing millions of lines of C++ code for display controls and Java code for weapons control using an automated batch process. SCIAT’s multi-user environment supported simultaneous analysis and viewing of results. SCIAT was found to be more accurate and thorough than the manual SME/CPCR process and assisted the SME’s in objectively selecting a subset of regression tests that exercise the areas impacted.
