Trucking’s Salute to Veterans: Wreaths Across America Day
(PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- Remember the fallen, honor those who serve.
On Saturday, December 14th, hundreds of people gathered at veterans’ cemeteries around the country for a moment of silence at noon (EST) as part of Wreaths Across America Day.
Wreaths Across America Day is an event that started in 1992 and continues each year with a mission to remember the fallen and honor those who serve by placing wreaths on veterans’ gravestones.
The cost of the event is paid by individual wreath donors, corporate sponsors, trucking companies, and volunteer truck drivers. Dart Transit Company was one of the volunteer trucking companies that provided transportation of wreaths to cemeteries.
Brad Chapdelaine, a professional truck driver who owns his own truck and contracts it with Dart, was one of 41 drivers who delivered wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery (where Wreaths Across America Day began). A record number of wreaths – more than 143,000 – were placed on graves this year in Arlington.
This was Brad’s third year delivering wreaths to Arlington. Lisa McAlpine, who also contracts a truck with Dart, delivered 2 loads of wreaths to veterans’ cemeteries in North Dakota.
“Wreaths Across America Day is an enormous effort that depends heavily on trucks, trailers, professional drivers, a dispatching system, and plenty of wreath sponsorships,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “It’s an amazing commitment that truly shows what values the trucking industry stands for.”
Laying a wreath on a headstone is a simple act, but it can have a powerful effect. To learn why the wreath has become a symbol for our veterans, their service and sacrifice, watch this video by Morrill Worcester (Founder of Wreaths Across America).
