Truth About Drugs Initiative Takes Aim at Drug Abuse in Scotland, Which has Tripled over the Past Decade
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2014 -- According to a study released October 28 by the Information Services Division of the Scotland National Health Services, some 5,000 Scots were hospitalized for drug abuse last year—three times as many as two decades ago. Emergency admissions accounted for 92 percent of these.
The Church of Scientology announces it will carry on with its efforts at drug education to help counter this urgent problem.
According to the Scottish Government website, “drug misuse costs society £3.5 billion a year whilst the impact of alcohol misuse is estimated to cost £3.6 billion a year—combined, this is around £1,800 for every adult in Scotland.” The website also stresses that educating young people about the dangers and risks associated with drug and alcohol misuse is of paramount importance.
Through its sponsorship and support of The Truth About Drugs drug education and prevention initiative, the Church of Scientology is an active partner in attacking this problem at its source—by providing youth with the facts about drugs so they can make an educated decision to live drug-free.
In addition to making these resources available to law enforcement, substance abuse programs, parents and educators, Scientologists carry out massive drug education campaigns, such as one that directly impacted Scotland this year—they sponsored the printing and shipping of a half million copies of The Truth About Drugs booklets for distribution at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Edinburgh International Festival.
Teams of Scientologists reached out with these booklets to local residents, shop owners, law enforcement, visitors and athletes. They were led by the Jive Aces swing band, Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists in 2012, who performed impromptu concerts from atop a double-decker bus.
Scotland is far from the only country affected by spiraling drug abuse. It would be hard to find a single nation that doesn’t suffer from this problem today. And with nearly 5,000 participating in the games, representing 71 different nations and territories, the volunteers brought their message to the athletes. Many of them, in turn, signed on as Drug Free Ambassadors to carry the campaign to the youth of their countries.
To make its humanitarian and social betterment initiatives broadly available, the Church of Scientology has published a new brochure, Voice for Humanity—Real Help, Real Results.
Inspired by the words of L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of the Scientology Religion, that “a being is only as valuable as he can serve others,” Scientologists wholeheartedly support these programs. Participation and collaboration in these initiatives is invited and welcomed from all who seek to improve conditions for themselves and others.
