Tubac Arizona's Chamber of Commerce Announces a Series of October Special Events Themed "Stories Worth Telling"
(PRWEB) October 04, 2015 -- October 2015 kicks off the Tubac-Tumacacori season of “Stories Worth Telling” featuring a series of special events and celebrations that tell the true stories of Juan Bautista de Anza who was in charge of Spain’s military presence in Southern Arizona, Don Torivio de Otero, the first European private landowner in Arizona and Charles D. Poston affectionately known as the “Father of Arizona.” Events include Anza Days, feature presentations, archaeology tours and the Presidio’s Cavalcade of History catalog launch.
Anza Days is a family friendly celebration re-enactment on horseback of Juan Bautista de Anza’s 1775 expedition from Tubac to the Pacific and the founding of San Francisco. The day will include children’s activities, Spanish colonial cavalry drills, Mass, musicians and dancers including an interactive authentic Nueva España Fandango performance. Anza Days is on Sat. Oct. 17, 2015 from 9am to 4pm at the Tumacacori Mission and the Tubac Presidio. Admission is free.
The Otero Family will do special presentation on Don Torivio de Otero who was on the leading edge of settling Arizona as the first European private landowner, lay teacher and desert irrigation system builder. He was awarded his land grant on Jan. 10, 1789, three months before George Washington became president of the United States. Diana DeLugan, an eighth generation descendent and author will speak on her illustrious ancestor in the Otero Hall. The event is on Oct. 11, 2015 at 2pm at Tubac Presidio. Admission is $7.50 and includes a Tour the Park.
In celebration of International Archaeology Month, Tubac Presidio State Historic Park will collaborate with Tumacacori National Historical Park to provide special tours of two unique archaeological sites, Los Santos Angeles de Guevavi mission, established by Father Kino in 1691 and a tour of the Spanish colonial archaeological site that preserves the remains of the original 1752 Tubac town site. Tours cost $15 and begin at the Tumacacori National Historical Park on Sat. Oct. 3, 2015 from 9:30am to 2:30pm.
Charles D. Poston, the “Father of Arizona,” is known for his early settlement of Arizona, his ownership of one of Arizona’s first silver mining companies headquartered in Tubac, and his efforts to make Arizona a U.S. territory. Gil Storms, author of Reconnaissance in Sonora: Charles D. Poston’s 1854 Exploration of Mexico and the Gadsden Purchase, will speak on the exciting life and times of Charles D. Poston. The event and book signing will be Sat. Oct. 24, 2015 at 2pm at the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Admission is $7.50 and includes admission to the Park.
The Presidio’s Cavalcade of History catalog launches on Thurs., Oct. 29, 2015 at 2pm featuring paintings of Arizona’s colorful history and sixteen Stories Worth Telling. Free Admission at Tubac Presidio Historic State Park.
The remaining season themes include, Celebrating Culture & Heritage in Nov. and Dec. 2015 comprising art festivals, concerts, historical reenactments and Luminary Nights. Art Worth Seeing in Jan. and Feb. anchored by the 57th Annual Festival of the Arts, Arizona Aqueous, a nationally known water media exhibit, Open Studio Tours and a ground-breaking art exhibit at the Tubac Center of the Arts. Tubac Takes Flight celebrates birding, flight with art and wine runs March thru April.
