Turner Selected to Redevelop Former Hahne & Co. Flagship Store
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 16, 2015 -- Turner Construction Company is pleased to announce that L+M Development Partners has selected Turner to manage the transformation of Newark, New Jersey’s historic Hahne & Co. department store into a mixed-income residential development with commercial and retail space.
Originally built in 1901 as Hahne & Company’s flagship store, the Broad Street building has been vacant for more than 30 years. Now, having recently undergone a make-ready phase that included a complete rehabilitation of the exterior facade, a number of interior structural upgrades and reinforcements and the construction of several new stairwells and elevator shafts, the Newark icon is ready to begin its next chapter.
The redeveloped Hahne & Co. will include 160 mixed-income apartments, more than 160,000-square feet of retail, commercial community and office space split between the original, historic structure, and an adjacent, 110,000-square-foot building now under construction. It will also feature an underground parking area with 200 spaces.
“In our area it seems like almost everyone has a story from their childhood about their parents or their grandparents shopping at the Hahne & Co. on Broad Street. It’s a local landmark and that history makes it an important part of Newark’s revitalization,” said Larry Boresen, manager of business development for Turner. He continued, “In that spirit, one of our objectives during construction is to create opportunities for a diverse, local workforce, as well as local minority and women owned subcontractors and vendors. We are excited to work with area partners to deliver this valuable resource for our community.”
