Doha, Qatar (PRWEB) October 23, 2016 -- Association for the Bladder Exstrophy Community (A-BE-C) today announced that two young children suffering from previously failed treatments of bladder exstrophy are receiving repair surgeries at Sidra Medical and Research Center in Qatar this month. The life-changing procedures are the result of an international collaboration between A-BE-C and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.
Both toddlers, a 19-month old from Central Asia and a 17-month old from Ghana, are traveling far from their homes for their surgeries, performed by Dr. Joao Luiz Pippi Salle, division chief of pediatric urology at Sidra and a member of A-BE-C’s Global Care team and board of advisors. Dr. Salle is one of just a handful of surgeons worldwide with expertise in bladder exstrophy.
“Sidra Medical and Research Center is becoming recognized as a center of excellence for the treatment of bladder exstrophy at its state-of-the-art facility,” said Pamela Block, executive director of A-BE-C. “We share a strong commitment to addressing the lack of access to quality treatment for bladder exstrophy internationally and look forward to exploring further ways we can work together.”
Approximately 4,300 babies are born with bladder exstrophy each year, many in parts of the world where access to effective treatment is not available. When treated early and effectively, children born with this initially devastating birth defect can go on to lead full lives that are not held back by their condition. However, when treatment is not available, they suffer physically, socially and psychologically. Left untreated, the condition can become fatal.
