Two Chicago Students Named National Winners in Children’s Map Competition, Advance to Internationals
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) May 16, 2015 -- Two Chicago students who created illustrated maps through Footprints of the Mind, a Chicago-based company dedicated to teaching children about the importance of geography through interactive activities, are among the six national winners chosen for their World Children’s Map submission.
“Our students created map illustrations that were meaningful to them and it showed,” says Irene Antonoglu, founder of Footprints of the Mind, who started the company as a way to teach geography to children that makes sense to them.
The Barbara Bard Petchenik Children’s Mapping Competition 2015 is an event created with the aim of promoting the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children. Of all the nationwide maps the children, ages 5-16, submitted for consideration, 13 of Antonoglu’s students made the first cut, three made it to the national finals and last week she learned two of her students have been chosen as national winners. One is a Chicago Public School student who attends Ebinger Elementary School on the city’s northwest side.
“Abby and Zoe’s maps will represent the United States and now advance to the International Competition, taking place in Rio de Janeiro at the General Assembly of the International Cartographic Association, in late August,” adds Antonoglu.
More than 8,000 geographers were in attendance and votes were cast for those six spots from the 21 illustrations that made it to nationals during the Association of American Geographers conference held last month in Chicago.
This year’s theme is “My place in today’s world.”
