UK-Based Gap Medics Expanding Availability to American Students
San Francisco, California (PRWEB) October 31, 2013 -- Founded and headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, Great Britain, Gap Medics has sent pre-medical students to observe clinical work overseas for almost five years. Last month, the company opened its U.S. headquarters in San Francisco, CA, to promote the programs and drum up interest among American students.
As the number of applicants to medical school grows, Gap Medics gives students a unique experience that helps them to stand out on their applications and lay the groundwork for a successful academic career. Gap Medics organizes and facilitates “hospital placements” in Tanzania, Thailand and the Czech Republic for prospective medical students. Students get firsthand medical experience as they shadow healthcare professionals in a hospital environment. The placements are accompanied by seminars in which the students learn more about what they witness during the shadowing sessions. Placements are customized and a variety of disciplines are accommodated, including pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-nursing, pre-midwifery and pre-physician assistant.
American students have joined our study abroad programs every year since the company’s founding, but Gap Medics expects to increase their participation with the inauguration of the first U.S. office. The San Francisco headquarters is focusing on reaching out to American undergraduates considering careers in medicine, pre-med college advisors and even interested high school students.
In 2005, Directors Dave Brown and Omar Mohamed founded Gap Medics’ sister company, Work the World, to offer clinical work programs to final-year medical students. Gap Medics was created four years later in response to an increasing number of students looking for similar projects preceding medical school.
Today, Gap Medics provides aspiring doctors and nurses with the opportunity to enhance their medical school applications by including relevant work experience. “They (students) will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will help them better understand their chosen career path, develop them as people, and be an invaluable asset on their university applications,” explains Dave Brown, Director of Gap Medics. Veronica Reina, Business Development Manager at the San Francisco office, agrees. “A Gap Medics placement adds spice to the application and gives the applicant depth. The student gets to be more than the qualitative sum of his or her GPA and MCAT score.”
There is already substantial enthusiasm for the programs in the United States, and the company anticipates that the San Francisco headquarters will be a domestic resource for students who want to get involved. Gap Medics is excited to have Ms. Reina onboard to head the marketing, outreach and development efforts. Prior to joining Gap Medics, Ms. Reina worked as the Business Manager at Alternet.org, a leading online source of progressive media. Before moving to California, Ms. Reina spent ten years in Miami incubating and launching several multi-million dollar online direct marketing ventures. Additionally, she’s has held senior positions with both UPS and Condo.com.
