Building stronger communities through education is the focus of the second annual UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Howard County Leaders’ Luncheon on October 19th at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Columbia, MD. More than 100 community influencers are scheduled to attend, including event honorary chair and keynote speakers United States Rep. Elijah Cummings and Lisa Salters, Monday Night Football’s side line reporter.
“Education is the bridge that connects generations,” said Charles Thompson III, UNCF area development director. “When we provide the educational resources to our young people, we empower them to build stronger communities, paying dividends for future generations.”
UNCF, the nation’s largest private provider of scholarships to minority students, provides support to 37 private member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and awards more than 10,000 scholarships a year to students attending more than 1,100 colleges and universities across the U.S.
With the commitment of its sponsors, UNCF awarded nearly 400 scholarships totaling $3.6 million to students from the Washington-Maryland-Virginia area last academic year. UNCF also distributed more than $5 million last year to thousands of students who attend colleges across Washington, Virginia and Maryland. Current sponsors for the second annual Howard County Leaders’ Luncheon, include BGE, Columbia Associations, Howard County Community College, St John Baptist Church and The Hutt Company.
“As a long-term resident of and business owner in Howard County, I am pleased and honored to support UNCF,” said Hutt. “This community shares my passion for helping deserving students advance in life. Moreover, we recognize the quality of life for the next generation will largely depend on the educational opportunities we afford them.”
