UNCF to Host the Indianapolis Masked Ball
INDIANAPOLIS (PRWEB) November 30, 2017 -- UNCF will host the Indianapolis Masked Ball on December 9 at the JW Marriott beginning at 5:30 p.m. Benefiting historically black colleges and universities, UNCF aims to change the narrative of HBCUs across the nation by equipping minority students with the resources necessary to transition into college and ultimately the workforce. More than 900 guests will attend the signature fundraising event, including Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson, city of Gary, Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF and a host of business, civic and education leaders that support UNCF’s work in getting students to and through college and showing the positive impact of HBCUs on the economy.
“Events such as the Indianapolis Masked Ball, stress the importance of providing the necessary resources for our young people to be successful,” said Lomax. “With a college education, students are contributing locally, through the jobs they create and the expenditures they make in the cities where they are located.”
With the help of the community, almost $850,000 was awarded in scholarships to Indiana students and almost $380,000 in scholarships for Indianapolis students in 2015-2016. Proving to be a good investment, as these students with degrees launch careers. And now, with the release of UNCF’s new publication, HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, we know graduates from HBCUs contributed $15 billion to the total economic impact and over 134,000 jobs nationwide.

UNCF Strada scholar Diona Richardson, sophomore at UNCF member institution Spelman College and UNCF intern A’Jewelle Johnson, junior at Providence Cristo Rey high school will be honored with the Shining Students award.
Illustrating the value placed in receiving the community’s support, superintendents Dr. Jeffrey Butts, Wayne Township; Dr. Dena Cushenberry, Warren Township; Dr. Lewis D. Ferebee, Indianapolis Public schools; Dr. Flora Reichanadter, Pike Township; Dr. Shawn Smith, Lawrence Township and Dr. Nikki C. Woodson, Washington Township serve as honorary co-chairs of the gala. Anthem and Lilly return as presenting sponsors.
J. Anthony Brown will serve as master of ceremonies with entertainment provided by global music icon Sheila E. The program will also include a VIP reception, program, dinner, dancing and a silent and live auction.
