Unicon Announces Development for Open Source Learning Record Store (LRS) in the Higher Education Learning Analytics Process
Gilbert, AZ (PRWEB) June 17, 2015 -- Unicon, Inc., a leading IT consulting, services, and support provider specializing in open source for the education technology market, today announced development on OpenLRS, an open source Learning Record Store (LRS) to aid in the learning analytics process. OpenLRS is an open source, secure, standards-based, standalone LRS that was built to fill the need for a storage mechanism for an open learning analytics environment. Built on a scalable architecture, using modern web technologies, OpenLRS provides the fast reads and writes necessary for a dynamic analytics environment. OpenLRS was funded by the Uniformed Services University (USU).
“OpenLRS is an integral component of the learning analytics process,” said Kate Valenti, Senior Director, Integration Services, Unicon. “OpenLRS makes it possible for institutions to store collected learning activities in a secure, standards-based environment before they are analyzed by open source models to aid student success. Unicon is excited to contribute to the process and is looking forward to being part of the process’ evolution.”
The learning analytics process is composed of five distinct stages: “Collection,” in which learning activities are compiled as data is generated from an LMS or other learning environment; “Storage,” where these activities are recorded and stored; “Analysis,” in which models process data to identify at-risk students or make other predictions; “Action,” a stage where intervention techniques can be employed; and “Communication,” where dashboards are used to display end data results.
OpenLRS is entering the Apereo Foundation’s incubation as a single component of the overall Apereo Learning Analytics Initiative (LAI). The Apereo LAI community consists of higher education professionals who share a passion for open source learning analytics projects and processes.
