Simply stated, layering separates the Windows C: drive into distinct, virtualized components, or “layers.” Windows OS and Application layers are controlled by IT and stored as read-only virtual disks that can be shared by many virtual machines. Personalization layers are writable virtual disks that capture all desktop-specific settings, data, and user-installed applications. Advanced file system and registry virtualization technology merges assigned layers, presenting a virtual C: drive to Windows as a single image and ensuring that layers interoperate in any order or combination as if they were locally installed.
