Union College to Host Symposium Targeting Eastern KY Challenges
Barbourville, KY (PRWEB) February 12, 2014 -- As part of the Union College Redbud Festival of Appalachian Culture, an educational symposium will be held on the Union College campus.
“Re-imagining Development in Eastern Kentucky: A Symposium on History and Place,” is scheduled for April 11 at 1 p.m. in the Rector Little Theatre.
According to Amanda Fickey, Ph.D., assistant professor and organizer of the symposium, the event will explore current economic challenges facing eastern Kentucky.
“Speakers at the event will foster a dialogue between local, regional and state leaders, community members and Union College students and faculty regarding the need for practical development solutions grounded in a critical understanding of our region’s history and culture,” said Fickey, who coordinates Appalachian studies at Union College.
Scheduled to present are: Mandy Lambert, acting commissioner of the Department for Business Development and interim executive director of the Office of Entrepreneurship, Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development; Teresa Montgomery, Knox County extension agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service; Kent Whitworth, executive director, Kentucky Historical Society; Hal B. Goode, president & CEO, Kentucky Association for Economic Development; and Jeff Spradling, director, University of Kentucky Robinson Scholars Program, University of Kentucky Appalachian Center.
The symposium is sponsored by the Union College Appalachian Studies Program, the Union College Redbud Festival of Appalachian Culture Planning Committee, the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the Kentucky Association for Economic Development, the Kentucky Historical Society, the Knox Arts, Crafts and Humanities Council, Knox Historical Society, the University of Kentucky Robinson Scholars Program, and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.
