University Area Kids Dive into Water Safety During Summer Camp
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) May 27, 2015 -- According to the CDC, for every child who drowns, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion trauma. Half of those victims require additional care or hospitalization for injuries that can result in long-term disabilities including severe brain damage and permanent loss of basic functions. Statistics show many children never learn basic water safety due to a lack of access to swimming pools or water-related recreational activities and that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by as much as 88 percent.
In an effort to equip children with this potentially life-saving skill, the University Area Community Development Corporation (UACDC) is partnering with the New Tampa Family YMCA to provide swimming lessons to children enrolled in the UACDC’s third annual DreamCatchers Summer Camp.
“So many families served by the UACDC mirror this alarming demographic because they have never had the opportunity to utilize any kind of water safety skills,” said UACDC’s Director of Development, Ronnie Oliver. “By providing access to formal swimming lessons, this camp is teaching children a skill that may one day save a life.”
The summer camps divided into two, five-week Monday through Friday sessions and are geared for children ages 6 to 12. Cost is $125 per child with a $10 non-refundable fee due at sign-up. The first session begins June 8 and the second session starts July 13. Parents can call 813.558.5212 to register.
Activities for the third annual DreamCatchers Summer Camp were made possible by generous grants from Molina Healthcare, New Tampa Family YMCA, Wal-Mart Store #3197, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Elder Ford of Tampa, New York Yankees Foundation, DeBartolo Family Foundation and Rebein Bangerter Rebein PA.
