University of London supports affordable and fair student housing through its Student Homes Scheme
(PRWEB UK) 21 July 2014 -- The University of London has set up a scheme where landlords can rent their properties directly to the University, who then sublet the property to their students. In doing so, student rents are guaranteed and tenancies are managed by the University.
Properties rented from individual landlords are likely to play a larger and more significant role for an increasing student population requiring affordable and accessible housing. However, many students have difficulties accessing the sector. For example, overseas students without UK based rent guarantors, often have to pay six months or more rent in advance. With the help of the Student Homes Scheme, these students and others have easier access to affordable accommodation.
One example is Mike Pringle, who was approached by the University of London to join the Student Homes Scheme. As a private landlord, he had been renting his properties to students for twelve years. He said, “Some students stayed on for two or three years but I was always worried about the management and continuity of the letting arrangements.
“It was therefore very opportune that the University of London started its Student Homes Scheme to find accommodation for its many students and to apply universal standards. I think it has gotten off to an excellent start and the University has been very helpful and cooperative. I would thoroughly recommend the scheme to any prospective landlords.”
Pat Newland, another private landlord using the scheme, said, “The University of London’s Student Homes Scheme provides landlords with a guaranteed rental income and removes the burden of recruiting tenants whilst providing students with first class accommodation at an affordable price.”
