University of San Francisco (USF) Hosts Parenting Symposium: Connecting with Kids in the Digital Age

Digital media and new technology are changing how families interact—but there's help. Bay Area educators and licensed therapists will share effective strategies for raising children in today's digital age, through interactive workshops and a panel presentation at the University of San Francisco (USF).
This is the 2nd annual Parenting Symposium. It is sponsored by USF's Center for Child and Family Development and the USF School of Education.
When: Sat., October 3, 2015, 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Panelists:
· Ashanti Branch, Bay Area educator, administrator and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club, a support group for African-American and Latino male students. The club has a 100% high school graduation rate and 93% of its participants attend college. (Featured in, The Mask You Live In.)
· Dede Tisone, co-founder of School Loop, an online communications and collaboration system for parents, students, and teachers, and a 20-year public school educator.
· Kelli Ferreira, Director of the Arrowsmith Program at the Academy of Cognitive Learning in Burlingame, CA. and a 30-year educator in the dyslexic community.
· Maryellen Mullin, Messy Parenting, a Ca. licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) who specializes in family systems, child trauma, and children's attention/behavioral issues.

“In San Francisco and the Bay Area, a hub of digital device innovation, parents navigate screen limits, brain development for young minds, and staying “present” to support kids with emotional and social relationships, both on and off the grid,” said Judith Goodell, associate professor of counseling psychology at USF and the new executive director of the Center for Child and Family Development. “In this, the Symposium’s second year, our goal is to continue to introduce research, experience and varying perspectives in order to facilitate meaningful dialogue about this important issue of parenting in a digital age by bringing together parents, educators, and leaders in the field.”

The USF Center for Child and Family Development (CCFD) builds on USF’s core mission of education and justice for all peoples, especially the poor, marginalized, and culturally diverse. Across the years, the CCFD has served the mental health needs of thousands of children and their families in the largest school based family counseling program in the country. Currently, 24 trainees and interns are serving in 19 public and parochial schools in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
