University of San Francisco (USF) Names Sustainability Coordinator, Will Lead New Office of Sustainability
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 28, 2015 -- The University of San Francisco has named Richard Hsu as its first Sustainability Coordinator. Hsu will lead USF's newly created Office of Sustainability, and is responsible for implementing the university's climate action plan and improving the USF community’s eco-literacy.
"USF's ultimate goal is to be carbon neutral," Hsu said. "It's an ambitious goal, but it is achievable if we commit ourselves, challenge our mindsets, and change our behavior. Each of us shares an inescapable responsibility for fostering a sustainable world, one that can provide the same opportunities and resources for our children and grandchildren as it does for us."
Among Hsu's goals are to help USF to curtail its energy and water use, increase its composting and recycling rates, and reduce the number of commuters who drive alone to campus.
“The University of San Francisco is committed to sustainability, and our new Office of Sustainability raises the bar," said Mike London, associate vice president for facilities management. "Richard will help us reinforce a strong culture of sustainability and help everyone at USF live up its motto, 'Change the World from Here.'"
This is a homecoming for Hsu, who earned an M.S. in Environmental Management from USF in 2013. He also earned a B.A. in Environmental Systems: Environmental Policy from U.C. San Diego.
Previously, Hsu worked as the Sustainability Coordinator at Skyline College in San Bruno, Ca., as a fellow with Climate Corps Bay Area. He authored a study on Skyline's transportation needs, implemented a sustainability plan, and led a 15-student team of "Green Gorillas," who demonstrated that 58% of the waste collected in the campus dining hall could be diverted from landfills to compost. That effort won the 2015 Energy and Sustainability Award for Student/Faculty Initiatives from the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.
Hsu also worked as an intern with the Alliance to Save Energy's Green Campus Program (now called PowerSave Campus).
