US News & World Report Ranks Zucker Hillside Hospital Among Nation's Top 20 Psychiatric Facilities
Glen Oaks, NY (PRWEB) July 16, 2013 -- The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks has been recognized as one of the nation’s top psychiatric facilities in the current issue of US News and World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals” posted today.
For 2013-2014, US News and World Report ranked Zucker Hillside Hospital (licensed under Long Island Jewish Medical Center) among only 16 hospitals nationwide that were recognized as the best by at least five percent of the psychiatric specialists who responded to US News surveys in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
“Zucker Hillside’s inclusion in the US News and World Report rankings is a confirmation of our continuing commitment to better serve our patients’ behavioral health needs,” said John Kane, MD, chair of psychiatry at Zucker Hillside and vice president of behavioral health at the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “It is a tribute to the impact that our staff has had in diagnosing, treating, teaching about and researching the psychiatric disorders that impact tens of millions of people."
Zucker Hillside Hospital opened in 1927 with 40 beds. Today, the facility operates 221 inpatient beds and delivers approximately 250,000 outpatient visits. The hospital recently opened a new, 116-bed, $120 million inpatient pavilion. This state-of-the-art, 130,000-square-foot facility houses six specialized units that discretely treat young adults and college students suffering from early phase psychosis and other serious conditions, including suicidal impulses and substance abuse; patients with major depression and bipolar disorder; women with gender-specific needs; adolescents with mood and severe behavior problems; and geriatric patients with later-life depression, psychiatric expression of physical illness and overwhelming behavioral disturbances that complicate Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Although Zucker Hillside has been recognized several times before in US News and World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, this is its highest national ranking.
US News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals. The specialty rankings and data were produced for US News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, NC. The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands Aug. 27.
In addition to Zucker Hillside Hospital, US News ranked North Shore-LIJ’s Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan 25th in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery, and 41st in ear, nose and throat. In June, US News and World Report’s America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” issue ranked North Shore-LIJ’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York among the nation’s top 50 hospitals in seven different pediatric specialty areas surveyed in the magazine’s 2013-14 rankings.
