US Perspective on Gluten-Related Diseases Published by Dove Medical Press

Going gluten free is not just a fad. For an increasing number of patients, the gluten free diet is a medical necessity. As corresponding author Dr. Vasagar says, “In this review of gluten-related disorders, we emphasize the word “disorder” because in most cases, one may return to a normal healthy life once the offending agent is removed or, in the case of wheat allergy, the allergy maybe outgrown. Wheat is a complicated grain containing multiple proteins, including gluten, which have the ability to provoke an immune response. To date, the protein or proteins responsible for non-celiac gluten sensitivity have not been established.”
Dr. Vasagar continues, “Gluten is a likely culprit however further work must be done. Certainly, our understanding of non-celiac gluten sensitivity will change as the mechanism behind the clinical presentation is uncovered. Although we have a better understanding of the pathophysiology of wheat allergy and celiac disease, focusing research efforts on the environmental factors that lead to loss of immune tolerance in these disorders will be important to ultimately understanding why allergic and autoimmune disorders are increasing.”
